Plymouth Rock Assurance Teams with Bunker Hill Home Insurance and the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety to Develop Severe Weather Safety Tips

Boston - Aug. 10, 2011 – Against the backdrop of this summer’s severe storms in Central and Western Massachusetts—and ahead of what will likely be another active hurricane season—Plymouth Rock Assurance today announced it has joined with Bunker Hill Insurance Company and the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety to help safeguard individuals and businesses.

Top Massachusetts and Connecticut auto insurance provider Plymouth Rock Assurance, and its affiliate, Bunker Hill Insurance Company — a provider of homeowners’ insurance for Massachusetts and Connecticut — have detailed a comprehensive series of recommendations to help both families and businesses prepare for the possibility of severe weather this fall. The recommendations can be immediately downloaded by clicking here. A summary of the recommendations is as follows:

  • Create a family emergency plan to ensure that every family member knows how to contact one another. This is critical in the event that family members become separated during a storm. The plan should include a pre-planned emergency meeting area; a directory of cell phone numbers for everyone in the family; and a clear evacuation strategy
  • Build an emergency supply kit. The kit should include at least a three-day supply of fresh waters and non-perishable food; one change of clothing per person; one blanket or sleeping bag per person; a first aid kit; flashlights; batteries; emergency tools; and cash
  • Safeguard your automobile. Park your car in a secure location away from trees (in a covered garage if you have that option). Protecting your car is critical. Not only is it a valuable asset, but you may need it should evacuation become necessary or advisable
  • Carefully review safety and preparedness material available online through the Federal Emergency Management Agency, National Hurricane Center, the American Red Cross and the National Weather Service

This is just the first in a series of recommendations that will be made to our customers and all Massachusetts and Connecticut residents throughout the hurricane season.

The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety, whose mission is to conduct objective, scientific research to identify and promote effective actions that strengthen homes, business and communities against natural disasters, has long provided information about how to protect homes and other structures that are vulnerable to hurricanes and other natural hazards. The organization’s website, www.DisasterSafety.org, offers expert advice on how to safeguard homes and buildings, from retrofitting roofs, doors and windows to ensuring a structure’s surroundings are secure and do not pose a threat to buildings during high winds

IBHS uses applied building science solutions to reduce the risks facing properties, and has incorporated that knowledge into its FORTIFIED programs. FORTIFIED for Safer Living® is a code-plus new construction program that helps homeowners and homebuilders construct stronger, safer homes from the ground up. FORTIFIED for Existing HomesTM is designed to help strengthen existing homes through retrofit techniques that will ward off damage from specific natural hazards. From basic improvements to whole-house renovations, almost any homeowner can gain peace of mind from Mother Nature by earning a FORTIFIED designation. Visit www.DisasterSafety.org for more information about IBHS’ FORTIFIED programs.

Check out this video of a demonstration at the IBHS Research Center, that compared the performance of a house built using conventional construction techniques and one built to FORTIFIED standards. “The severe weather that Western and Central Massachusetts residents endured this summer wreaked havoc for families and businesses. We want to help our customers, agents and the communities we serve be better prepared heading into the fall hurricane season, said Keith Jensen, Chief Marketing Officer, Plymouth Rock Assurance. “By aligning with the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety, we are confident that the recommendations we’re providing will enable our customers and agents to prepare adequately should disaster strike in the months ahead.”
